Classroom Technology

Thank you to the 193 teachers who have completed our District Standard Classroom Equipment Survey. I wanted to share some results of the survey, as well as talk through a few things about what is “standard district provided equipment” and what is “building provided”.

RESULTS:

Currently, we'll be making sure that all classrooms have a projector. This is a tool that is vital across all buildings. As you can see, the remaining equipment is either not in a majority of classrooms nor used regularly by a majority of teachers.  We do understand how these other tools (document cameras, speakers, and amplification systems) can be helpful to teaching and learning. However, due to the need to begin to systematically replace several projectors, all document cameras, and speakers will need to be purchased or replaced out of building funds.

We are working to begin a district wide replacement cycle of classroom projectors. We have begun planning and have identified several starting points for replacement. Buildings that are under construction upgrades have been identified first (portions of Prairie High School and Prairie View). Prairie Crest and Prairie Heights will be getting new projectors through their building remodel. We have also identified parts of Prairie Point as an area to be upgraded. We have started with 8th grade classrooms at Point. Over the next few years, we will upgrade the rest of Point and Ridge. Creeksters will hopefully be getting a new building in the nearer future and friends at HIll are in the newest building and will be upgraded in the final year of our upgrade project.

In the “I wish” section of the survey, there was a theme. Wireless connection to our projector.  Our team is currently testing out some wireless projection tools. Some buildings have purchased Apple TVs or Chromecasts for some classrooms or conference rooms. We’re trying to find a “best practice” with these as we’re noticing issues that arise when these are implemented. A few issues we are seeing are the wireless access in some areas slowing down or becoming intermittent. We are looking into these scenarios and trying to which options make the most sense. Please expect to hear more from us about best practice in wireless projection in the upcoming months.

Please always remember that resources are limited and there are over 500 classrooms in the district we’re supporting. Overall, I wanted to share a response to the survey. I do wish we could get you everything you wanted in regards to technology for your classroom.  Thank you for taking part in the survey to give us an idea of current reality within our district.

When I leave the district - Using Google Takeout

I actually took this picture myself at a lake my family visits each summer.. quite the sunset! Any who, this post is targeted at folks who are planning to leave the district , whether that be due to retirement or another opportunity.  When you leave our district, we suspend your Google account. This usually happens after our last teacher contract day or when we are notified of you leaving the district over the summer. When the account is suspended, other users will be able to access all shared documents with your account as normal. One year after the account is suspended, the account is then deleted. Then all documents will be deleted that the user owned. Other users will no longer be able to access those shared documents and they will be gone forever. Please make sure you move any needed content to a Shared Drive that your team will need in the future. Please see this POST on how to do that.  If you want to copy any or all of your "content" "see Google docs and email&

Shared Drives - when folks leave our district

At this time of year, we see some staff leave our district. We know that happens for a variety of reasons, spouse job change, moving to administration, etc... In preparation for that, I'd like to send a friendly reminder about shared Google Docs. When a staff member leaves our district, we suspend their Google account. This usually happens after our last teacher contract day or when we are notified of the staff member leaving the district over the summer. When the account is suspended, users will be able to access all shared documents with that person's account as normal. One year after the account is suspended, the account is then deleted. Then all documents will be deleted that the user owned. Other users will no longer be able to access those shared documents. One way to work around this issue of losing shared documents is to create Shared Drives . These change ownership of documents to our domain rather than just a user. By adding multiple users to the shared drive, m

Personal Device and Personal Accounts

We have received some recent guidance regarding personal cell phone use from Matt Carver, Legal Council for School Administrators of Iowa that we felt would be beneficial to pass along to you. LINK TO ARTICLE (NOTE ARTICLE IS ON PAGE 4). Please know that although this article is directed toward school administrators, it applies to ALL school employees .  One key point that I want to reiterate is this paragraph below:  "Does this mean that all communications between school employees or representatives are subject to public records requests? NO. Again, consider if the communication is about official business. If the communication does not relate to the employee or board member carrying out their official duties or making a decision about the school district, a student, or another employee, then it is unlikely the communication is subject to a request. Remember that public employees have constitutionally protected rights to speak on matters of public concern in their personal li
